The Word Mapping Strategy is a research-based strategy developed at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning that is designed to help older students learn how to predict the meaning of unknown words.  This strategy helps students identify prefixes, suffixes, and roots and practice predicting the meaning of words using those parts. 

Instruction in this strategy works best when students have learned basic decoding skills (reading at 4th grade level or higher).  This strategy can be taught in different kinds of instructional settings including content area classes, Tier 2 and Tier 3 settings, and special education classes. Instruction for this session will be with a nationally certified Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) professional developer and literacy consultants from CKEC.  Highlights of this PD include numerous resources (strategy manuals, Google Folder with electronic resources), opportunities to practice and prepare for teaching the strategy, and videos of the strategy being taught to students. 

This will be an in-person session.
